Rizwan Ali has taken an active approach in exposing myself to healthcare at an earlier stage in my life. Through high school and college, he volunteered at a hospital in my community and worked as a Surgical Tech at an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic. During this work experience, he built an understanding in how patient interaction is pivotal in the success of a healthcare entity. During grad school, Rizwan interned at Sentara Healthcare, The Methodist Hospital and Midland Memorial Hospital where he participated in many projects dealing with the day to day operations. |

Rizwan is currently developing a charter for the Surgical Executive Committee. He is also working on business development initiatives for the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center and GI Health Program and assisting with the preliminary Steps of eCare implementation. Randy Hall is currently a student at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health (SPH) pursuing his degree of Masters of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Administration. He is an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he received a Bachelors of Science in Community Health with a concentration in Health Administration and Health Education and minored in Chemistry. Randy is the recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, which provides community service fellowships for graduate students in health-related professional fields who are dedicated to addressing unmet health needs in their local areas. He is also President of UIC’s SPH Public Health Student Association and a volunteer at St. Columbanus Food Pantry. Randy is also an active member of the National Association of Health Service Executives and the American College of Health Executives. Randy’s career goals are to start his own International Health Services Conglomerate that will specialize in Health Delivery Systems, International Health Policy and Legislation, and International Health Financing. Anit Makhija is from Birmingham, Alabama and she received her Bachelors in Health Sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Leslie Rosario is a recent graduate from the University of Central Florida (UCF). During her last two years at UCF she was an active member of the Health Administration Club, most commonly known as the student chapter of American College of Healthcare Executives. Leslie was also a site leader for Alternative Spring Break which is a volunteer opportunity that spans the entire week of Spring Break. She led a group of ten students to Nashville, Tennessee where, together with United Cerebral Palsy, they constructed three ramps for members of the community who are disabled and could not afford the project without assistance. She is currently at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY, assisting the facility director, Mary-Ellen Piche, as well as the executive staff in their strategic development efforts. |

This summer Leslie is analyzing the needs of the Facilities Management department to develop a comprehensive staffing plan. In addition to that she is also identifying barriers as to why the veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom are more prone to missing their appointments when compared to veterans of past wars. It is the organizations goal to define these barriers and improve the processes so that the VA can better serve the nation’s veterans. |

Lorie Thibodeaux is a rising senior majoring in Sociology at Spring Hill College, a Jesuit University. Currently, she is working on the System Redesign Summit II, an upcoming conference that will be held in July 2007. Her tasks are geared toward the success of the event and include creating PowerPoint presentations, observing data, participating in conference calls, and collating information into packets. I have also had the opportunity to interact with major leaders throughout the organization. She has also attended field trips to other facilities in VISN 17. Through this additional exposure she was able to understand the skills needed that allows organizations such as VISN 17 to become a success. |

As a part of his internship experience Brian has been attending meetings regularly and rotating through various departments at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center. He started in Public Affairs, where He created a new website for the medical center and attended a PAO conference. At the PAO conference he had the opportunity to meet executives on the regional level. Brian has also had the opportunity to visit a number of other VA facilities where he met the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and a number of political dignitaries. He was recently invited to a Congressional Briefing by the regional leadership in Washington D.C.
