2012 SEP Registration is Now Open.
Registration for hospitals and students for the 2012 Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is now open. The SEP is a 10 - 12 week, paid internship for MHA grad students, within your hospital. Making connections. Learning the job. Developing real-world experience. Hospitals can learn more about the SEP, by clicking here. Matching for SEP internships has begun and will go through June 2012. The Institute for Diversity in Health Management has launched a new and important program to meet the challenge of leadership diversity in the executive suite. "Preparing Emerging Minority Leaders in Health Care for the CEO & C-Level Roles," is designed to accelerate the preparation of mid-level health care managers and new generation of leaders to represent the growing diversity of the U.S. patient population. The first session is scheduled for April 25-26, 2012 at the American Hospital Association offices located at 155 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL. To register or for more information click here. AnMed Health learned that health and health care disparities disproportionately affect minority populations in Anderson County. To better understand the data, a multi-disciplinary team was assembled to develop a disparities dashboard to identify its most vulnerable, underserved and costly patient populations. AnMed will discuss how it is applying the principles of REaL (race, ethnicity and language) data collection and cultural competence to monitor progress across race, ethnicity, and/or language need, reduce cost, analyze and improve patient outcomes, and enhance health care quality. A new field guide has just been released by The Joint Commission. This new field guide from the Joint Commission urges US hospitals to create a more welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment that contributes to improved health care quality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients and their families. The field guide features a compilation of strategies, practice examples, resources, and testimonials designed to help hospitals in their efforts to improve communication and provide more patient-centered care to their LGBT patients.

From the Jan/Feb, 2012 Journal of Healthcare Management ,this article by Ebbin Dotson, PhD makes the argument that if leadership within a hospital or health organization can make embrace best diversity practices, they can reduce disparities and improve the quality of care that they offer their patients. The Institute for Diversity in Health Management is pleased to announce that the 2011 - 2012 Benchmarking Survey has been released to Institute members and is now actively seeking responses. Produced in partnership with the Health Forum, this survey intends to quantify the ethnic and cultural communities of the national hospital system and identify culturally pro-active hospitals for profile in the Institute's Case Study System.
